Innovative Learning in Aquariums – new Digital Shark Experience at Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science in Miami

Inside Explorer is used today in museums and science centers worldwide to create amazing interactive learning experiences. Users, young and old, can explore scientific 3D content based on CT scans, ranging from human anatomy and animal physiology to insects, mummies and meteorites.

Now with this pioneering new project, it opens up the possibility of how Inside Explorer also can be used in research and public engagement at thousands of aquariums around the world.

On May 8th, 2017 the spectacular aquarium at the new Frost Science in Miami, Florida, USA will open its doors with a unique interactive digital exhibit – the first of its kind in the world.

Explore sharks using 3D X-ray and interactive visualization

Aquarium visitors will be able to interactively explore 3D X-ray scans of the same sharks and rays that are swimming in the adjacent aquarium tanks to better appreciate their amazing physiology and gain a better understanding of how they function, literally from the inside out.

Using large touch tables, the user will be able to virtually dissect the sharks. By simple gestures users can manipulate, zoom, virtually cut and see through layers of the 3D X-ray scans.

Exclusive access to research material

This has been made possible through a close collaboration with Professor Gavin Naylor of the Hollings Marine Research Laboratory in Charleston, USA. This relationship grants Interspectral exclusive access to Professor Naylor’s astounding extensive digital collection of 3D research scans of sharks and rays, for public exploration and education.

Through Inside Explorer, aquariums worldwide can now also access this research material, which is interpreted for public access, enabling visitors to better understand their live collections.

Frost Science, Miami is the first aquarium institution worldwide to take advantage of this significant relationship and create a unique aquarium experience like never before.
