Tom Tits Experiment

Tom Tits Experiment is a well known science centre located in Södertälje, south of Stockholm. Tom Tits have a huge range of hands-on experiments featuring science and technology, divided between four floors. Among their many fascinating exhibitions they have the sophisticated CellSkapt exhibition where visitors can engage themselves in over 80 experiments covering the full human body and its many impressive skills.

Walking around the Cellskapt exhibition, it is hard not to pay attention to the eye-catching anatomical theatre. It is beautifully decorated with skeletons and anatomical models welcoming the visitors into the arena. Entering this old fashioned theatre one can lay eyes (and hands) on the interactive centre piece, named the ”Autopsy experiment”. In this experiment, the visitors get to take on the role of a doctor or veterinarian, and virtually examine both human and animal bodies using her or his own fingertips.

”The visualisation screen in the anatomical theatre is intended to show how the old-fashioned way of examining bodies and organs for educational purposes can be supplemented with new methods.”

INSIDE EXPLORER HELP BRIDGING TRADITION WITH TECHNOLOGY

Tom Tits have found a way to bridge the old traditions of medical studies with the technology being used by doctors of today. The Inside Explorer software, installed with a variation of 3D visualisations, enables Tom Tits to demonstrate accurate science methods through an experiment that is both easy to use and fun to explore. The physical aids located around the touch table (skeletons and anatomical models) have shown to be good compliments when it comes to understanding the data sets.

We use the table to perform shows in the anatomical theatre. For these shows, we have called for visitors nearby and asked them to sit down while we explain the experiment and how to interact with the content before them. We always try our best to tailor each show to fit the visitors and their level of understanding. When we have young visitors, the focus is on simple matters, like how to press the screen, but for older visitors we give information about the technology and the content they are watching.

INSIDE EXPLORER MAKES SCIENCE ACCESSIBLE FOR PEOPLE OF ALL AGES

The visitors’ reactions to the Autopsy Experiment differ a lot depending on age and pre-knowledge. Children who are familiar with the technology and the use of touch screens have shown a great interest and fascination in the visualisations. They use the surrounding 3D models to better understand the virtual content.

Having said that, children are not the only ones attracted to the anatomical theatre and the Autopsy experiment. Grownups often show interest in the underlaying technology, and many like to explore the data sets on their own. Tom Tits have also seen that Inside Explorer can help creating a bond between parents and their children by giving them the possibility to explore and learn together using visualizations.

THE NEW UPDATE: BEN BODY FACILITATES HUMAN ANATOMY EDUCATION

Tom Tits have had the touch-table running Inside Explorer open to the public since 2018. Soon after implementing the software Tom Tits recognized its potential to further educate within the field of human anatomy.Tom Tits turned to Interspectral and expressed a need for a more detailed and informative human body visualization that could further serve an educational purpose, a way to spread knowledge about the invisible, but life depending, bodily functions and systems.

The solution to match their needs was Ben Body. Thanks to a combination of segmented real-captured data and anatomical representations in 3D, the inside of Ben offers a detailed and thorough visual experience of a healthy human body. The new visible systems and organs makes it easy to educate and fascinate at the same time. As it stands now, Inside Explorer is not a part of an educational program or any classroom teaching but the visualization table serves as an educational tool in the exhibition room.

”When we have shows for visitors as a part of our newtraining program, we have received incredibly good feedback. It has been so good that the visitors have wanted to see the show again.”
